Reforming the Tax Code: Abolishing the IRS
Fair Tax:
As a CPA, I know about the burdens of taxes and government regulations. According to the nonpartisan Tax Foundation, America’s taxpayers had to work until April 30th of 2007 just to pay their total tax bill. This is unacceptable. I will work tirelessly to put hard earned money back in taxpayers' pockets - where it belongs - not in the hands of Washington bureaucrats.
We should create a fair, more efficient and more economically sound tax system. According to Congressman John Linder of Georgia, there are a number of key principles of fundamental tax reform that achieve President Bush’s objectives of tax reform that is simple, fair and growth-oriented.
In my opinion there is only one tax reform proposal that would ensure just that, the Fair Tax. Unlike our outdated, productivity-killing income-tax, the Fair Tax is a national sales tax, based on consumption, which would allow Americans the opportunity to decide for themselves how much they will be taxed in a year.
Since 1913, federal taxes, of all kinds, have increased by nearly 170,000 percent. We need 17,000 pages of hardbound books to contain the entire federal tax law. Even worse, the annual burden of tax compliance, IRS administration and enforcement, and the giant disincentive of Uncle Sam taking a first lien on all productivity in America, costs our economy more than a $1 trillion each year.
While we need taxes to pay for our federal government, we don’t need the IRS or the federal income tax. The Fair Tax would both maintain our current levels of revenue and bring more freedom and prosperity to Americans. It would generate revenue to keep Social Security and Medicare in place. Without the IRS, it will cost taxpayers less for the federal government to generate the same revenue.
With the Fair Tax, Americans would not have a single dollar taken from their paychecks by the federal government. Americans would decide for themselves how much they will pay in taxes each year when they make their purchases, providing a tax system that is equitable for Americans at every income level. Bill Gates would pay the highest amount if he spent the highest amount and the poorest family in America would pay the least.
As someone who works in the tax field, I can tell you that in America, we spend too much time and money accommodating the growing complexity and oppressiveness of the federal tax structure. The time for fundamental tax reform is now and the Fair Tax is our best chance to get it right.
