Protecting America's Farmers
Farmers
The American farmer knows how to be productive and can easily compete in the open market but unfortunately too often faces trade barriers, restrictive compacts and regulatory burdens.
Brazoria County in congressional district 14 is called “The Cradle (or the Birthplace) of Texas" because Stephen F Austin's "Original 300" settled on the banks of the Brazos River here in 1821 while Texas was still its own country. West Columbia is the site of the First Capital of the Republic in 1836. This legacy is treasured by residents and speaks for our strong history in agriculture.
As an example, in Brazoria county alone, we annually produce $60 million of farm products, mainly cattle, rice, sorghum, and cotton; $20 million of seafood, mainly shrimp. Brazoria County is also home to vast resources of bottom land hardwoods, and more than 70,000 acres of national wildlife refuges.
Congressional district 14 includes the Texas rice belt counties of Victoria, Wharton, Jackson, Brazoria, Fort Bend, Matagorda, Galveston and Calhoun where farming is a tradition and a staple of the economy passed down from generation to generation.
Farmers worry that the consequences of estate taxes and burdensome regulations may hamper the ability of passing their farm to succeeding generations. I'm committed to supporting our farmers and expanding, not restricting, opportunities for future generations.
