Preserving America's Leadership in Space
Space Exploration:
I remember during the summer of 1969, I sat on the edge of a bed with my entire family and watched the lunar landing of the Apollo 11. The room was filled with joy and pride. My parents kept telling us how we would remember this day for the rest of our lives and I distinctly remember feeling that America was indeed the greatest country in the universe.
I know how Thomas Jefferson must have felt when he sent Lewis and Clark out to explore the west. Thomas Jefferson, one of the writers of the constitution, funded an exploration of the west with funds from the federal government. Just like the Lewis and Clark expedition, our exploration of space will continue to add to our country. It is clear that our founders believed in exploration and in fact funded these expeditions with funds from the federal government. As a kid of the space age, I have always been intrigued and fascinated by space. That fascination has not waned with time. The next 10 years holds great promise for our space program as we expand our exploration of space back to the moon and then on to Mars.
The Benefits of NASA
NASA and the dedicated professionals who serve it, have always reflected the finest values of our country -- daring, discipline, ingenuity, and unity in the pursuit of great goals.
The Johnson Space Center, which is less than 2 miles from congressional district 14, is responsible for 16,800 jobs in the Houston area. Many of America’s elite astronauts and thousands of other aerospace professionals live in our district. The total annual economic impact to our area from JSC exceeds $3.5 billion and it is vital that the congressman from CD 14 not only support the mission, but enhanced federal funding for NASA
My Commitment to Space
NASA plays a vital role in maintaining America’s lead in industry and innovation. Since my election, I have regularly traveled to Washington, D.C as a member of Citizens for Space Exploration whose mission is to promote awareness of the benefits of human space exploration and support for NASA and the Vision for Space Exploration. I will continue to be a strong advocate for NASA and human space exploration as your congressman because I believe a fully-funded NASA contributes to a more prosperous 14th congressional district and a safer, stronger America.
